This is volume 2 of the History of Men's Magazine. Volume 2 runs from the end of WWII to 1959. The author strayed from this a bit as several chapters had stuff that was in the early 1960's. Particularly the chapter on Playboy magazine. That chapter on the history of Playboy pretty much summed up the start of Playboy in 1953 to 2004 the date the book was published. None of this matters really. The book is very interesting to see how many men's magazines were being published in the 1950's. Also the women were very beautiful and the photos hold up well even today. I was surprised at the amount of nudity in the 1950's. I expected it to be mostly bathing suit photos. And a lot of them were but there was still nudity. Once again great cover shots of the magazines. Just like volume 1. The final chapter of the ads in the magazines is very interesting. Very much looking forward to volume 3.
Building my set of these books buying the used ones when they can be had at a good price. This one is a winner all the way around. Huge book, great printing quality, and the reason they did these on matte paper is because the source material for these was originally printed on poor quality pulp paper to begin with - the images actually reproduce better on matte paper than they would have on glossy stock.This one is spot-on perfect and there's loads of great photos and information to be found here. If you're a fan of flirty and naughty retro cheesecake photos and artwork, buy this one - you will not regret it. These are destined to increase in value, so buy it while you can. HIghly recommend this one.
This volume, like the first is an excellent addition to my library on the the history of sex in america. Not to mention the titalation of the photos. The only detractor was the format. Like the first it I'd done in three languages all at once and can be a bit confusing! Excellent read well worth the cost! dianefromcarroll@yahoo.com
